In 1942, the British interned thousands of Japanese civilians inside Delhi’s Purana Qila — then let the episode vanish from memory. Writer and journalist Raghu Karnad — author of Farthest Field and co-founder of The Wire — has spent a year as a fellow at the New York Public Library, recovering this forgotten history.
In a moderated conversation, he traces how questions of belonging — who counts, who is documented, who is remembered — echo from that wartime camp into India’s present.
A discussion moderated by Arnaaz Ameer, S.J.D. Candidate at HLS, about history, memory, and citizenship, from the archive to the present day.
Lunch will be provided.
This event is sponsored by HLS Advocates for Human Rights, the Human Rights Program, and the Program on Law and Society in the Muslim World at Harvard Law School.
